NCEA Level 2 Music
Subject Description

Music at Level 2 develops the skills learned in Level 1 Music. Performance is a big aspect of Level 2, with the students performing as soloists and as members of a group. Students will be offered free instrumental tuition in piano, guitar, drums and voice.
This course is divided into four main areas
- Performing music as a soloist
- Performing music as a member of a group
- Study and research New Zealand Music
- Compose music/songs and create instrumentations
Students will learn to:
- Read and write music notation
- Learn chords and how to play them on an instrument
- Learn to write lyrics
- Compose songs in groups based on the chords they have learned
- Learn to play an instrument or sing and perform songs
- Study different genres of music
- Explore New Zealand music
Music Co-curricular Activities:
Smokefree Showquest, Rockquest and Tangata Beats, Play it Strange Songwriting competition, RLHS Talent Quest, Lunchtime concerts, assembly performances, New Zealand Music Commission Mentoring workshops, EPIC Night Out and many more.

Recommended Prior Learning
The prerequisite for 12 Music is at least achieving the performance standards at Level 1 Music or please see Mrs Stunell to confirm that you meet the standard so you can be successful in this subject.
Level 2 Music is mainly performance based. Students need to be capable of performing songs or pieces of music on an instrument or as a singer to a reasonably high standard. As part of 12 Music, students will perform as a soloist and as a member of a group.
