NCEA Level 1 Geography

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs S. Beaumont-Gill

We all live our lives geographically. Planet Earth is our home.  It is diverse, inspiring and ever changing. Studying geography draws on personal experience, to better help us understand the places we live in. Geography draws from across the physical, cultural, economic and political spheres to illuminate key issues for the present and the future.

This course is ideally suited to students with a strong interest in environmental and global issues.  It explores;

  • the use of natural features of Waitomo Caves for Tourism and its sustainability
  • the global pattern of earthquakes around the world.
  • the current resource consent issues for Rotorua Lakes water quality and pollution
  • the impacts of extreme natural events such as Tsunamis
  • designing and carrying out group research projects

As there is no specific “job” for a Geographer, Geography related careers include:

Environmental Science, Resource Management and consents, Geology/Volcanology, Geothermal Energy,

Civil Engineer, Hydrology, Disaster Planning (Local Council) or Economic Development Advisor.
