NCEA Level 3 Engineering

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs M. Webster.

This is a full year's course covering Engineering Drawing, machining and fabrication.  This course is for students considering careers such as tool making, fitting, fabrication and general engineering.

It is essential that students understand the importance of safety in the Engineering Workshop. Unsafe behaviour is not tolerated and any student who puts themselves or others at risk will be removed from the workshop immediately and possibly permanently.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Engineering Drawing and surface development: You will learn how to develop flat patterns for forming into complex 3D shapes, taking account of the dimensional changes due to the effects of the bend radius and the material thickness.

Term 2
Fabrication: Working with sheet metal to produce a candle lantern. This involves cutting, shaping, forming and welding sheet steel. You will learn how to use the CNC plasma cutter, how to form transitions that join a square shape to a round one.

Term 3
Machining: You will produce a replica of a historical German crossbow that was used for hunting in the 15th century! This will require a high level of craft skills as well as complex machining to very fine tolerances.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students must have completed Level 1 Engineering. In addition, their Kamar record must demonstrate consistent safe working practices and an adherence to expected classroom routines.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

$60 for raw materials. Extra embellishments and additional resources as appropriate.
